Maybe means No

다른 나라도 마찬가지겠지만, 특히 브라질에서 누군가가 "Maybe"라고 말했다면, "No"로 받아들이는 것이 정신건강에 좋다.
In my opinion, everywhere in the world is more less the same, but specially in Brazil, if somebody said "Maybe", it's better to understand it as "No" for my mental health.

Hitchhiking a truck from Argentina to Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2000km ride nonstop

I have just arrived in Sao Paulo yesterday early in the morning.
A Bolivian man Richard helped me to come here by his big big truck which can carries many cars. We made almost 2000km nonstop. He drove so fast, it was like a roller coaster ride for more than 20 hours. His truck had a problem, we found smoke from the backside of his truck. It was on Sunday, for that we couldn't repair it. I was concerned about explosion or fire on it. Whenever he drove the wrong way in order to make passing relatively slower other cars, I was so nervous. Falling asleep at the wheel or a slight mistake could kill us without a trace, I was worried about that as well. I tried not to sleep, because I didn't want to make him sleepy, I was exhausted. Anyway Richard was an excellent driver, for him it's just a routine-jobs. We arrived in Sao Paulo, safely. I don't know if Richard usually expresses his love to his family or not, but he doesn't mind to drive more than thousands of kilometers, it's very tough and hard. I think it is more than words.

When I was flying from Senegal, Africa to Ushuaia, Argentina, I transferred the flight in Sao Paulo. Every cars along the streetlamps dotted looked so small like toys from the sky in Sao Paulo. But now I feel like I'm the ant in the toy car in exactly the same place.

Two things travelers don't have [Around the world by bike]

I met a very nice man in Senegal. His name is Aziz.
He told me that people who didn't travel are the same as people who read just only one page in a book.
He also said that there are two things travelers don't have.

One is Home.
The other is Family.

He said, he wanted to give me home while I was staying in his house,
and he wanted to be my family.
I felt very guilty, because I imagined Africa is really poor.
But he helped me, he didn't care who I am, where I am from.
He just considered me as a traveler who need family and home.
I was very touched at that time.
He understood all the difficulties of travelers.

To be honest, I don't want to judge anyone.
But some people are fake.
What they say and what they do are different.
But he was authentic.
I like this kind of person.

And I'm not a hero, I'm not a beggar.
I'm just me and a traveler.

RUN! and Asado [Around the world by bike]

When I was in Croatia, I met some Argentinian friends.
They were studying there, and they were not very wealthy.
In Croatia, if you have a student card, you can take the tram for free.
When my friends didn't have student cards, they used to take the tram without tickets.
But when I met them, they had student cards, so they didn't have to worry about controllers.
But I didn't have a student card. My friend told me that,

"Kim! Don't worry about anything.
If I say RUN! We all run! OK?"

I really liked them. They didn't have to run anymore.
Because they had student cards. But they didn't want to leave me alone.
They were happy and ready to run with me. They understood everything.
Some people may not understand me and us.

But I love them very much.

They even gave me their photo.
They told me it was my passport to Argentina.
They said if I show their photo to their parents in Argentina,
their parents will give me Asado(Barbecue).
They didn't like meats in Croatia, because it's expensive and not very tasty.
But they said Asado is very cheap and a very good meat.
I can't wait to try Asado in Argentina!
Asado is coming or I'm going to Asado!

From Cape Verde

I'm in Cape Verde now, waiting for the next flight tomorrow afternoon.
I have got three troubles.

1. It was extremely expensive(100euro) to send my bike with me. I threw out many things in order to lose my weight. I really wanted to use my free baggage for my bike. But the guy never listened to me. It was not included for free baggage.

2. I'm staying in the airport in Cape Verde only for the transit. But I had to pay for visa. Visa for 1 month, Visa for 1 day cost the same.(25 euro for less than 24 hours) Very strange. The airport is so small, there is no place for the transit.

3. I lost my three bags. I was very surprised and confused. Where are they? Still in Dakar? Should I take them in Ushuaia separately? I realized that later my three bags were still in the airplane alone until all the people had gone with their baggage.

I'm still very far from Ushuaia. I have to pray for my calm and relaxed journey.
Sorry for complaining.

Try to find possibility first [Around the world by bike]

# There was an article about Michaell Wigge who traveled around the world
without money.
The article said,
He started his world trip from Berlin, June, 2010.
He had traveled 11 countries for 150 days in Europe, Canada, USA, South America. More than 100 people helped him by hosting, giving food, offering transportation. He can speak German, English and Spanish. He published a book about his story.

돈 한 푼 없이 세계일주 성공한 男, 비법은?

[서울신문 나우뉴스]세계일주 하려면 적금 통장 털어야 한다? NO!

그리고 최근에는 150일 간의 도전을 담은 책 'How to Travel the World for Free: I Did It, and You Can Do It, Too!'(국내판 '땡전 한푼 없이 떠난 세계여행')을 출간해 세계여행의 꿈을 실현할 수 있는 방법을 전했다.

비게의 여행기는 그의 웹사이트인 'howtotraveltheworldforfree.com'에서 확인할 수 있으며, 미국 공영방송 PBS에서는 그가 여행하며 직접 찍은 동영상을 6월까지 방송한다.

# Many Korean people wrote negative comments about themselves, not him as below.

1. He speaks English and Spanish.
It's more difficult to get than money.

2. He is German and he is a man.

If I ask a job as an Asian, they will turn me down and insult me.
It's impossible for me.

It's true if you can speak as many languages as you can, it will help you.
But you can also find countries which don't use English and Spanish.
Look at me. My English is also terrible, and I don't speak Spanish.
You can't speak all the languages, it's impossible.

And if you are Asians, do you really think you can't find jobs on boats ?
I see many ad which is trying to find Asian workers.
And I met many Asian crews.

I don't understand why people try to focus on impossibility.
You can improve you language ability while you are traveling.
Oh, I'm Asian, No way, I'm Korean, Oh, I have no money, I'm too old,
I'm human, I'm breathing, I have five fingers, it's not possible.
So what?

Many foreigners consider Asians as Genius.

They often make a joke about difficulty level Asians.
What are problems as Asians ?
Stupid people(Racists) are everywhere even in Asia.
But it's their problem.

I'm not very interested in being famous as this guy.
And I have't read his story.
Probably it might be great stories.

I also have great stories as he has.
I don't want to compare to anyone.
He's been to 11 countries, I've been to more than 30 countries for 2 years.

Apparently more than 100 people helped him on the road.
More than 1000 people helped me on the road.

But I'm still Asian, and Korean.

It's a pity that many Asian and Korean people don't know me.

I want to say whatever you do,
please, do not try to find impossibility,
try to find possibility first.

One more step to South America [Around the world by bike]

I had tried to hitchhike a boat to South America from Spain(1 month), Dakar(1 month).
Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything. I was exhausted and bit depressed.
I wrote about my situation on the internet. It became a discussed posting quite much.

Some people have encouraged me, and the others have judged me. I was bit upset with the judges in the beginning. Because I thought they got me wrong. But now I think they gave me chances to think twice about myself.

Meanwhile, I have heard a good news. A traveling community in South Korea called One World Travel Maker(5bull.net) said that they can help me by donation to cross the Atlantic ocean. Many people who I don't know encouraged me, and sent me messages of hope in order to make me not to give up. I appreciate them, and I feel responsible for their helps.

The quotation from the leader of this community was inspiring.
"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. It will be brighter than before."

I also want to light the world on the road by bike. I believe this support means "Do not complain, do not give up in every moment of frustration."

I am planning to fly to the southernmost part of South America. Unfortunately, Dakar is not the perfect place to fly to South America. Now, I'm searching the cheapest way to fly to Punta Arenas, Chile or Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Thank you very much.

Yes, you can travel by bike [around the world by bike]

I met this family on the way to Montenegro from Croatia.
They are from Germany.
In South Korea, traveling by bike is getting common,
but still it's not very popular.
Some young men try to travel by bike before or after the military services.
We don't have many holidays as Europeans have,
it's difficult to travel by bike for us.
And you can't imagine traveling by bike with your daughter or son.
Because we think it's very dangerous.
Some people may think they are crazy.
But I don't think so, and to be honest, I'm jealous of this family.
I'm dreaming  to travel by bike with my son or daughter in the future.
I want to share good memories with my family.
And they had very very old bikes.
That's why the mother is pushing her bike on the hill.
I realized that an expensive bike or family is not a very big problem.
If you change your mind,

I met many mature couples on their bikes on the road.
More than 60 years old, sometimes 70.
They look very healthy.
Because they have young spirit!
I got inspired many times.
I can't say I'm old.
Age ain't nothing but a number.

Many people like to make many excuses.
I'm too old, I don't have a good(?) bike, I have family,
I don't have money, I don't have time.
But if you really want to travel by bike,
I want to say Just try!

Boat Hitchhiking, Sailing in the Mediterranean sea from Israel to Turkey [around the world by bike]

After I traveled in Israel, Palestine territory, and Jordan,
I had to decide where to go next.
I had two options.

Syria or Egypt.

The problem was that both of them were not very safe.
I was confused where to go, because many people were dying in Syria and Egypt.
It was not very good time to travel by bike there.
Some people said,
"Go to Syria, Syria is fine. The war is only on TV. Do not trust them."

And the others said,
"No, no. Are you crazy? Go to Egypt.
The situation in Egypt is better than Syria.
If you go to Syria, I think you are going to die."

I was close to Syria geographically.
I saw only negative news on TV.
And it was forbidden for Korean people to go to Syria,
because it was dangerous. I guess still it is.
If Korean government will know that I've been to Syria,
I will have to pay a lot of money or I will have to go to jail.
But I also saw the news that Korean people were kidnapped in Sinai peninsula Egypt.

Where should I go then ?

I tried to find a boat to any countries in the Mediterranean sea.
Greece or Italy was perfect, Turkey was fine. Libya? NO.

Basically boat hitchhiking is not easy always.
I'm not insulting girls,
but if I was a girl, I may get more chances.
But I know it's also risky for them.
Sorry, this is one of my prejudices,
but I thought If I'm not a girl, he will not take me.

If you know how to sail or how to repair boats,
or how to cook, it will help you to hitchhike a boat.
But unfortunately, I didn't know how to sail, how to repair, how to cook.
I know only how to eat!

And normally you need to pay at least for your food when you are sailing.
But you know I'm broke.
I couldn't pay for anything.

I was not a girl of course.
I didn't know anything about sailing.
I couldn't pay.
I had a bicycle with 50kg stuff.
I was the worst person, very problematic.

Who wants take me ?
It doesn't make sense at all.
Sailors didn't need me.
I felt I was very miserable.

What I can do is just TRY always.
I don't want to think about possibilities before I try.
I came here Jordan from South Korea without money,
Does it make sense ?
I thought if I didn't find anyone who could help me,
I could go to Syria, I didn't want though.

I found a website called findacrew.net.
I found only one person who had a boat in Israel,
He was heading to Turkey, I've sent an email to him.
But I didn't expect very much to have a reply from him.
You know, I didn't send 1,000 emails, I just sent only one.
If he wouldn't answer, Syria was waiting for me.

But he did!

When I read his reply,
I was so startled that my heart almost stopped beating.
He was the captain David, from the United States,
77 years old man(couldn't believe his age, because he was so energetic and healthy).

He was not sure if he could take me or not.
He was waiting for an answer from somebody else.
I was not a priority for him.
Because he might want to take somebody who was better than me.
Somebody who can pay money, more experienced, more helpful and so on.
Apparently, many people applied for him in the beginning.
But all of they canceled in the end.

Oh, Thanks God!
David found only me.
He couldn't sail alone, he needed someone's helps.
He decided to take me to Turkey for free! Yeah!
Now, I can survive!!

David told me he liked my email.
Because I said I know nothing about sailing,
but I'm willing to learn.
David said, many people like to present themselves.
"I know sailing, I know this, I know that..."
But many times, they knew nothing in practice.
And it was a problem for David.
He said it's better to be empty.
If you know something incorrectly, it will bother everyone including the captain.
He said he could teach everything to me.

So, dear my readers,
Sorry for my long introduction,
Are you ready to sail ?

I used to cook here.
You can say this is a "kitchen",
but as I heard, it's better to say "Galley".
David taught me about some sailing words kindly.

The name of boat was Sea Symphony.

This is my left hand.
We call the left side of boat PORT.
Right side is STARBOARD.
David wrote this on my left hand fingers for me not to forget.

I learned how to tie knots

Our plan
Wake up early in the morning, prepare to sail

Fuel and water are the most important things when you are sailing

I spent most of the time here in front of steering

Dinghy
I don't know why, but It sounds lovely in Korean

It used to make me busy

I'm not very good at cooking,
but I tried to cook Korean food for David.
This is Bibimbop, the most famous Korean food.
Not all, but many Korean food is spicy.
David said he liked spicy food.

He seemed he was enjoying(?) my Bibimbop.

But he had to drink much water after our dinner.

The lights over the port hole

I left my bike near the generator next to my cabin.

Whatever you eat on the boat,
it tastes awesome.
David told me that even if you don't do anything on the boat,
your muscles are working a lot.
That's why everything tastes so good.

We docked in Cyprus on the way to Turkey
in order to get more fuel and water.

At the end of each days, we used to enjoy wines.
It couldn't be better.

The Captain David

Sometimes, we were sailing all night long.
It was very hard physically,
but it was fantastic.
Such a quite peaceful time.
The moon,
Calm,
Many stars in the sky.
No worries.
I can't describe very well,
I was falling into a trance.
I felt time stood still.

I couldn't hold my camera properly,
I got funny shapes of the moon.

We worked few hours shift,
navigated by the stars,
the stars were more correct than the compass.
Sometimes it was freezing, and adventurous enough.

Actually, in the beginning,
I spent very hard time, because of the seasick.
I vomited a lot, and I almost died on the deck.
I couldn't move at all in the boat.
It was getting worse when I tried to go to my cabin and the galley.
After I took the pills, I felt better
But still I was not in good mood.
David didn't let me go under the deck.
He prepared food for me every time.
But I felt guilty, I really wanted to do something for him.
In Asian culture, if you are older than me,
I'm supposed to work more.
I found It very ridiculous when he served food for me.
It tasted very good though.
In fact, food which cooked by somebody else is always tasty. :P

The island looked like a turtle.

For fun

We were only two people,
We used to talk a lot about everything.
He also used to correct my English.
I don't like my English,
but he encouraged me very much,
he said my English was excellent.

He decided to take me to Turkey without pay.
He taught me how to sail.
He taught me how to speak correct English.
He cooked delicious food for me.
He told me about many interesting stories
when he was working as a lawyer before he retired.

I can't thank him enough.
I felt very sad, because Turkey was around the corner.
It meant time to say goodbye was coming.

Finally we arrived in Marmaris, Turkey.
It took us one week from Israel.
He said Marmaris is like his home.
He had many friends in Marmaris, he was going to meet his friends.

I celebrated my own victory!
With a glass of wine and Basamic sauce.

I decided to help him little bit more for his next sailing.

Sailing with David was really great time,
I can say it was one of the best memories in my trip.
I was definitely lucky to meet him, I truly appreciate him.
And I miss him very much.
Dear David,
I think we were wonderful shipmates!

Now the situation is the same.
I tried to find a boat from Algeciras, Spain to South America  for one month.
Unfortunately, I found nothing.
But I think I was lucky again,
Because at least, I've tried and I learned that nothing is easy.

And I came to Dakar, Senegal.
Now, I'm trying to find a boat again,
but as always I have to hear only negative news.
To be honest, it makes me very depressed.
I don't want to worry,
because my worries can't solve the problems.
But it's true I'm just a small person,
I really don't know what to do.
Should I finish my adventure here and go home ?
Is this my dead end ?
I always want to be positive.
I want to say to people and myself,
If you never give up, nothing is impossible,
You will see a ray of light at the end of a dark tunnel
as I found it before in Jordan .
I don't know if I will be lucky again,
Nothing is sure,
it makes me excited and nervous too.
I will see what will happen to me.

This is the adventure!
